The center of the Dojo pops up like a lantern and gives off light at night for the trail system.

The main deck of the Sento is level with the ledge, resulting in an eye level view of the ocean. The elevated site also offers privacy to those soaking, as they are not immediately visible from either trail. “There’s time to cover up as you hear someone approaching,” Shaw says.

There is a private outdoor shower with an ocean view outside the primary bathroom.

A flat stone dust path that is easily navigable on foot or by wheelchair leads from the kitchen to the Near Cabin. “We used boardwalks only for the most frequently traversed paths since they impact the site more than a simple walkway,” Shaw says.

The living room’s wood-burning fireplace has a concrete hearth that wraps the chimney and runs under the windows, acting as seating, a plant ledge, and creating a spot to store logs, all of which are harvested from the site.

Their bathroom has floor-to-ceiling sage tiles in the shower, coordinating with the green shade used in the kitchen.

"There are some great advantages to growing your plants from seed," says Lee Sullivan, who runs the Urban Veggie Patch Instagram account from her home in Australia. "There is greater diversity in terms of what you can grow, and you have control over how the seedlings are raised, which is especially important if you are committed to organic growing."

The living area is arranged with a built-in sofa/bench. Upper shelving wraps around the interior and offers storage and display space.

“The house shouldn't be something that ties you down to one place, it should give you new options for living,” says Ojalo.

The “River Cabaan” is just steps away from the Wilson River and a 80-minute drive from Portland, Oregon.
