“I believe in simplicity and natural materials,” says Steph. “In our home, what really pops is our things: our furniture, art, and books. And in my [Tiny Grocer] store in the same way what really pops is our products.

“One of the early inspirations was Donald Judd,” says Arthur. “That’s not where we ended up, but there was a time when every choice was ‘What would Donald Judd do?’ and usually the answer was the most minimal thing possible.”

A brick hearth designed by Winter was updated with a gas fireplace. The couple redid the kitchen without enlarging it, in an effort to stay true to Winter’s plan. “We were trying to do a modern version of what would feel right in a house designed in the ’70s,” explains Rick.

In the living room, soft-hued seating arranged in a circle is perfect for entertaining. On the far wall, Sunrise Over the Hudson, by Erik Koeppel, competes with the stunning scenery outside. “Charlie was interested in skewered views, like looking straight up at the sky and then out to the woods,” says Rick.

Zoé Stone's home is nestled into a forested hillside that had never been built on before. Others had shied away from its engineering challenges, but not Zoé and her dad.

Minimal hardscaping was done to keep natural ground conditions as is, and fallen trees were left to decompose. The home was built on the slope of the lot to minimize how much land was moved.

Marambio and Noguera divided up the plot of land to share with friends, but were conscious to place structures to accommodate the animals who move constantly through the space. “We wanted to respect that there were other paths previous to ours,” says Marmabio, who notes that there are 100 types of birds that live in the area.

They subdivided their three hectares of land to share with friends, and selected for themselves the property that sat lowest. “Everyone wants a view, but we want to be immersed in the landscape,” says Marambio. The plot of land is by a ravine; the sound of trickling water is constant. The lush vegetation is home to foxes, birds and native cats.

Custom matchbooks are cutesy, emblazoned with monikers and logos, and part of the growing phenomenon of people treating their domestic spaces and personal “brands” as interconnected.

The contrasting style of the original home and the 70s-era addition come together in this space, now with white oak wall paneling and a twenty-foot-long, seven-foot-wide custom sofa designed by Office of Tangible Space. The painting is by Kathan Zerzan.

Yuan relocated the utility functions to a peripheral area of the house and created a breakfast niche that overlooks the sunken den. It has sconces by L’aviva Home, a Sun At Six table, and upholstery by Johanna Gullichsen. The artwork is by Erin Lynn Welsh.
