The cozy breakfast nook encased by windows provides direct access to the backyard.

Until Hindman and Carr moved in, the space had never been a home. Carr cooks every day, so the compact kitchen was a natural starting point for the renovation. It features an industrial curving steel counter, which also functions as a breakfast bar. The Scrap stools are by contemporary Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek.

Black-and-white tile by Marmoleum laid in a checkerboard pattern contrasts with the mint-green cabinetry in the kitchen.

In the kids' bathroom, Fireclay Ogee Drop tile in two shades of blue brings a pop of playful color.

The house stands on a quiet street among other buildings from the 1930s. A coating of black paint and new black stucco hint at the changes within.
