Los Angeles firm Chet Architecture crafts a deeply personal hillside home packed with primary colors—including a custom mural that now holds an even deeper meaning.

The double-height wall of windows in the living room looks out on the property and was a big draw on their first walk-through.

“We like to approach the design of outdoor living spaces similarly to the indoor living space,” says Clifton. “Using a mix of forms, textures, and finishes adds depth and interest while ensuring that the outdoor space feels like an extension of the home rather than a separate entity.”

As Nicolás Tovo and Teresa Sarmiento of La Base embraced modular design as part of their architectural practice, they noticed that prospective clients were wary of prefabricated construction. So the duo teamed up with Place, an Argentine prefab builder, to make a proof of concept just outside the Patagonian resort town of Bariloche.

While the original house had a full glass facade, the addition uses windows in specific areas to draw your attention to the smaller details.

The backsplash and countertops are green quartzite to bring the colors of nature inside (but in retrospect, Bassam and Ming would pick another material besides natural stone for ease of maintenance). The flooring and all the cabinetry is natural white oak. The pendant hanging over the dining table is NR2 by Moooi, chosen for its transparency.
