The couple worked with Seattle-based firm SHED Architecture + Design on a remodel. At the front door the glass clerestory and sidelite were kept, but the solid door swapped out for a transparent one.

The rounded ceiling, made of cypress planks left over from Brian’s construction business, bounces and softens light—a strategy often used by museums and galleries. The custom semicircular windows were a splurge. “In any design, certain elements take it to the next level,” Ostman says. “The glazing makes the ceiling feel taller, grander.”

A walled patio with a sunken garden takes up fully half the ground floor. Open to the sky, it allows sun and rain to enter, while the walls offer protection from the area’s constant winds. “The home takes a piece of the site into its enclosure,” says Barache.
