The remodeled kitchen offers a whole corner of glass, and continues as a backsplash beneath the new cabinetry.

“Clients come in, and we make them coffee,” Shivley explains. “We use it as an opportunity to slow the pace, to chit-chat and catch up on how their day has been. It takes the formality out of meetings, to make it really social.” Instead of a stuffy atmosphere, “we're just in a coffee shop catching up,” he says.

Custom glass and iron doors, fabricated locally, section off a conference room in the cafe. “It was designed to be something that could be open to the public, but it’s wonderful that it’s not,” Mike says. “I get my own little toy coffee shop to play with.”

The full kitchen features a breakfast bar and is open to the dining and living areas, making the home perfect for entertaining. The kitchen also overlooks the back garden.

You arrive at the Barn Gallery via a meandering driveway through native woodland of Fir, Pine and Alder. Twelve species of Bamboo and several different ornamental grasses integrated with wildflowers will become more evident as the natural landscaping matures. The Bamboo nearest to the house is in spiral galvanized pots fabricated from the left over culvert used for the pre-filtration tower located near the rain storage tank.

This kitchen features Rejuvenation’s new Allenglade pendants and sconces to create a strong statement with lighting. Here, the design follows the “rule of three,” which dictates that three pendant lights will create a sense of visual balance when evenly spaced over a large island. The oil-rubbed bronze finish of the lighting has been matched with the finish of the Poetto faucets and the Rye counter stools to create a cohesive, industrial-inspired aesthetic throughout.

A second-story addition to this midcentury home in Los Angeles is linked to the original structure by a 30-foot skylight. The spacious kitchen—the heart of the home—was designed for entertaining, with white oak cabinetry, quartz countertops, and dual islands for overflow seating.

A large picture window draws in ample natural light into the kitchen, complete with all new custom cabinetry, a built-in Beko refrigerator, and breakfast nook.

After considering concrete floors, the homeowners and Wilson decided on ceramic tile for a more natural but still durable, low-maintenance ease.

The renovated dining area is clad with the house's original cedar panels, which were re-milled.

The new master bedroom includes a bay window protruding outward from the original facade, making a window seat that frames a view of shore pines and the dunes.

Relocating the kitchen to the southeast corner and removing a wall helped not only connect it to the rest of the house, but created a more cinematic view of the nearby wetlands.

Natural materials were selected as much for tactile delight as for health and environmental benefits.
