The landscape designer Garrett Eckbo created this garden in his backyard at the behest of the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA). Eckbo used large quanitites of aluminum—in screens, trellises, and a centerpiece fountain—and ALCOA's advertising agency used photos of the "ALCOA Forecast Garden" to promote peacetime uses for the material. Linear light fixtures are integrated into the Ipe ceilings. Sand finish concrete patios compliment the ground concrete floors on the inside of the home.

Aaron and Yuka Ruell transformed a Portland ranch house into a retro-inspired family home with plenty of spaces—like the trellised porch—for their four children to roam.

The screened porch provides a covered outdoor space that is still open to the elements. Scott built many of the furnishings himself, including the coffee table and integrated bench.

The combination of a low concrete wall and built-in bench creates an intimate seating area that acts as an extension to the kitchen and dining room. Another steel trellis above creates an armature for more plants that will fill in and provide shade. The terrace is topped with blue stone and wood screens give the plants a ladder on which to grow.
