The landscape designer Garrett Eckbo created this garden in his backyard at the behest of the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA). Eckbo used large quanitites of aluminum—in screens, trellises, and a centerpiece fountain—and ALCOA's advertising agency used photos of the "ALCOA Forecast Garden" to promote peacetime uses for the material. Main entertaining patio at dusk. The trellis beams above are space more tightly as they get closer to the house, in order to help with sun control. Linear light fixtures are integrated into the Ipe ceilings. Sand finish concrete patios compliment the ground concrete floors on the inside of the home.
The combination of a low concrete wall and built-in bench creates an intimate seating area that acts as an extension to the kitchen and dining room. Another steel trellis above creates an armature for more plants that will fill in and provide shade. The terrace is topped with blue stone and wood screens give the plants a ladder on which to grow.
