The interior was constructed using cross-laminated timber (CLT), which provides a sustainable alternative to concrete and steel.

The home is perched on a rise on the property to enjoy the forest views.

In the shared bath, nothing was changed except for the wall color.

In their child’s room, a dark green wall paint draws the eye to the view out the windows.

The couple designed the oak built-ins to tuck under the existing high windows, making sure the new wood tones meld with the existing wood on the floor and ceiling.

A custom sofa anchors the space, with a custom rug from Armadillo & Co. A Wittus fireplace was designed into the custom millwork.

There are decks on all levels of the home. “We utilize them all,” says James. “I use them throughout the day to catch the sun at different times.”

In the main bedroom, linens are by Morrow soft goods and the rug is from Armadillo & Co.

In the kitchen, the couple kept the original cabinets and "beautiful, custom-rolled stainless-steel counters,” says Christine. They updated the island counter, flooring, and backsplash, adding Foro marble, Concrete Collaborative tiles, and Cle tile, respectively.

There are easy lines of sight between the main floor and the upper level.

The wall-mounted shelves are custom-designed by Stewart-Schafer.

The couple preserved the original fireplace treatment. A B&B Italia sectional sits atop a Ben Selomani rug with Arne Norell chairs. The large-scale artwork is by Christine.

The double-height wall of windows in the living room looks out on the property and was a big draw on their first walk-through.

Christine Stucker and James Veal, founders of Stewart-Schafer, snapped up this architect-designed house on 18 acres in Connecticut as soon as they found it in 2019.
