Brooklyn-based architecture firm Estudio Esmero worked within the foundation and steel structure of an existing carriage house in upstate New York for this new build, which features concrete floors with bright gold kintsugi details.

The courtyard and pool are adjacent to the entry stair and half a level above the street, so that no excavation was required. This brings the courtyard closer to the upper level living areas, while still allowing the guest suite on the lower level to feel connected to the courtyard.

Built-in shelving provides plenty of room for the couple’s collection of books.

Although respecting the context of the house was important to Sofia, she did not restrict her design choices to a specific time period: “Back then, they would have had carpets and curtains and heavy designs, whereas I wanted to it be free and lightweight and not too stuffy.”

“There is an enormous amount of glass here,” laughs Vanbesien—so much so that the design team struggled to find enough wall space to mount the heat pump.

The bath in the ensuite is made of terrazzo.

The flooring is terrazzo. Vanbesian designed custom ash-wood cabinetry for storage throughout the home.

At the Block in Marfa, Texas, Judd used two hangars to display his work. In one of the rooms of the east building, the artist mounted three “stacks” on the walls, along with a rectangular floor work.

Kim Kardashian falsely claimed the table and chairs in her office were by Donald Judd. They were based on these original sets, which include the 84 Chair the La Mansana Table 22.

Donald Judd acquired this New York City building for $68,000 in 1968. His family moved in a year later and renovated over decades. Judd continued to use it to experiment with his ideas even after he moved to Texas in the 1970s.

The living room features an Isamu Noguchi Freeform sofa, a brassy Slit Table XL from Hay, and a square silver coffee table from FOUND home by Ruth Davis. The artwork is by Carlos Cruz Diez.

“The new space aligns perfectly with our lifestyle, especially considering our roles as a family with two kids and the need to work from home frequently,” says Claudia.

The exterior’s concrete walls pick up on the tones of the rocks that emerge from the surrounding hillside.
