The original home was converted into a bedroom level, and given a second-story addition and roof deck. The dark exterior color, a charcoal-eggplant hue, lets the landscape colors stand out in contrast. “The existing house roof became the roof deck,” says Rogers. “And then I just shifted over the addition so that it floated over the landscape.”

Before: “I felt like it was in a park setting,” says Rogers. “I don't think I've ever worked on a site that beautiful before in the East Bay. It’s very unusual to have those kinds of features in such a large site.”

While the new facade is swathed in black stucco, it maintains elements of the original carriage house, which is hidden within the wall. Beyond the grounding stucco base, Healey designed two white volumes to be seen above, teasing the idea that more exists beyond the entry point.

Before: The original carriage house facade was salvageable, but the addition towards the back was in a state of disrepair. The charming elements, such as the circular portal window and garage opening, were kept and re-imagined by the architect. "If you already have those openings and you can work around them, it makes a lot of sense,

The new addition is spanned by a sliding glass door to the kitchen, bringing in much more natural light and creating easy flow between inside and out. The owners especially appreciate how the new deck is at grade with the exterior door for a seamless transition, making the kitchen feel “a part of the garden,” says the homeowner.

Before: A previous remodel had already reshaped the rear of the home.

Blaine Architects capped the front addition to this Eichler home with a shed roof that mimics the slope of traditional Eichlers, but slants in the opposite direction to make it distinct. The wood screen is made from Accoya.

Before: This 1959 Eichler home in the Sunnyvale area was a 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom, courtyard model, with an L-shaped plan and high fence to create privacy from the street.

A cantilevered staircase with tread and railings composed of translucent steel mesh now connects the second and third floors.

Reclaimed wood covers the ceiling in the main room and bedroom. The large white light fixture was reused from the barn’s previous incarnation, and the sectional is from Interior Define.

In the remodel, Lotz reoriented the pool and added multiple outdoor spaces, such as a covered terrace with the braai, as well as an outdoor dining table with built-in seating.

Before: The rear façade did not have many windows.

The countertop is a custom Concrete Collaborative terrazzo, and the colored flecks nod to the wall tiles.

Warwas offset the rear of the ADU to accommodate the power lines running behind the house, and he designed a window in the office/guest room upstairs that meets the roof in the same way that the window off the dining area/kitchen meets the ground.

Used primarily as a storage area, the side of the garage closest to the house opened to a small grassy play area.

The white walls of the master suite, located on the top floor of the house, reflect sunlight, allowing the room to be bathed in a natural glow. Integrated with the roof deck, a green roof provides a cooling effect for the upper floors and absorbs rainwater, preventing run-off.
