Inspired by her visits to Japan, architect Cary Bernstein did not build to the property lines but left open about three-and-a-half feet on each side of the house: “These little side gardens make rooms feel bigger, since they make nature part of your interiors and bring light and air circulation into the house,” she says.

The original ensuite featured an awkward triangular shower, and was, as Daniel recalls, “the size of a closet. It looked like a powder room.” Clever use of millwork redirected the light from the skylight away from the bedroom and into the bathroom.

For a bathroom in the new addition, the architects utilized the former addition's rocky foundation, complemented by zellige tile.

Originally built in 1974 as a kit home, this A-frame cabin was saved from ruins by an ambitious couple who temporarily turned it into a home for five.

Family members have their own areas in the mudroom. Each is equipped with a hanging basket and a repurposed teak shower mat.

Superior insulation protects against temperature fluctuations. “We only require a Dyson Hot+Cold air to heat and cool the space. On really hot days, the large front sliding door system creates an opening of 2000mm (h) x 1300mm (w), which creates a very comfortable place to work and relax.”

Jocie specified slate floor tiles and cement wall tiles by Clé, then applied Venetian plaster from Master of Plaster with the help of some friends. "It’s really fun once you get into the rhythm of it, but definitely takes some time," says the architect.

The primary bathroom features brass fixtures and teak details that are accentuated by a smooth plaster finish. "The continuity of the finishes creates visual balance within the space," says Mac.
