Lucent Modern

The laundry is tucked away beside the kitchen. A skylight floods the small space with natural light, and cat doors provide the resident feline with easy access to the litter box kept here.

The living area’s cathedral ceiling extends outwards to become the northern veranda awning, which helps to shade the interior.

The wallpaper in the formal entry space is Blackthorn by House of Hackney. The pattern—which features hawthorns, daisies, and tulips forming a skull of foliage blooms—is part of a collaboration with the William Morris Gallery, and it was originally created by Morris in 1892.

The formal entry space features a built-in bench and is defined by a timber detail that runs up the walls and across the ceiling. “Built-ins are an excellent way to bring a human scale to a project,” says architect Nicholas Fiore. “People seek an intimacy—a coziness—in their homes, and we think that niches, window seats, benches, nooks, and other ‘hand-scale’ details can satisfy that human need.”

The mudroom offers plenty of built-in storage, which was essential for the family with young children. The bold panoramic wallpaper is Forêt Noire by Nathalie Lété for Moustache.

Recycled timbers are used throughout the home from the curved bench to the joinery in the kitchen. The kitchen also connects to a cold-store walk-in pantry that’s cooled with an in-slab ventilation pipe funneling cool under-house air.

The bathroom is finished in simple stucco with bent copper plumbing fixtures and oversized terrazzo tile. Niches in the wall accommodate bathing supplies and provide a convenient foothold for leg-shaving.

Shumaker Design + Build Associates honed in on natural light, rich tones, and earthy materials to update this Chicago kitchen. The renovated kitchen now boasts a ten-foot-long banquette paired with a West Elm table, offering seating for everything from quick breakfasts to grand dinners.

The primary bathroom features a large, walk-in steam shower finished in Venetian plaster. The architects at goC punched a light well in the corner to bring more natural light into the space.

The powder room plays with the same textures and materials found in the primary suite (plaster-coated walls, ribbed wood, marble), but the darker tones elevate the look.
