The current homeowner recently completed an extensive interior renovation that updated finishes while retaining many of Clark's original details—including a dramatic 17-foot-tall room divider that separates the kitchen and dining area, as well as expansive glass-block windows.

"The kitchen is the heart of the home, where we can enjoy the simplicity of being together as a family," Montalba says.

Washington, DC–based Robert Gurney Architects designed this home for clients seeking a light-filled, modern residence. It’s composed of 13 modules that were built in a Virginia factory in less than two weeks.

The stone fireplace and concrete floors add to the earthy feel of the home. The living room features a sectional by Focus One Home.

The bedrooms open up to the landscape for a tree house–like feel.

Landscape designer Kenneth Philip worked with mwworks to fill in the forested setting.

The calm dining room features custom dining table, Davide Groppi MISS LED metal pendant lamps by Omar Carraglia, and the owner’s own dining chairs.

The kitchen overlooks stunning views and features a Solna faucet by Brizo, Urbanedge sinks by Julien, a Lumen dishwasher by Miele, a Gaggenau cooktop, honed Balsatina countertops, and custom mixed-grain teak cabinetry.

The home features a flat roofline, and it’s composed of stained red cedar, concrete, and basalt—materials that weather well and blend seamlessly with the land.

The modern kitchen features professional-grade appliances and a large island with waterfall countertops. Natural light pours in from a wall of glass stretching across the living room.

Several stairs lead up to the kitchen while a spiral staircase leads down to a covered patio area. The wooden beams draw the eye past the island to clerestory windows and sliding glass doors on the other side.

The classic post-and-beam style defines the home's interior. Exposed wood ceilings and lightly colored hardwood floors run throughout the open concept living area.

The house's elevation was inspired by Paul Rudolph's nearby Sanderling Beach Club.

A pool cage with a retractable awing makes the pool deck feel like a natural extension of the home's interior, while the terraced construction lifts the building up above the level of floods and storm surges.

A rendering shows when each skylight comes into play during the sun's journey across the sky.

An asymmetrical, futuristic, and seductively lit carport faces the street, looking a bit like a set from Star Wars' Cloud City.

The landscape engulfs the strategically positioned home, hiding it from the street and from nearby neighbors.
