The handmade spiral staircase.

The material palette of oak, birch plywood, and oiled pine—combined with the polished concrete floor—add a textural richness to the space.

The stairs and guard rail are made of Ash. Vertical beams are connected to the white, steel substructure with hex-head screws that have been concealed with putty—a simple technique that makes a strong impact. “There are barely any other decorative elements in the interior space,” explains Sonja. “It is all about the play of forms, plans, surfaces, and the patterns of the different wooden coatings under the light.”

A timber platform forms the first step of the open timber staircase in the entry hallway, which leads into the dining and living space.

The screen was fabricated by the contractor O’Brien Wood & Iron. "I like this treatment because it’s so dynamic," says Jocie. "It acts as a separator, but it does have some transparency and visibility with it." The existing red oak floors in this room were stripped and bleached to more closely match the new white oak stairs and floors.

Blue Savoy marble from Coastal Tile lines the floor.

The new staircase to the bunk room also has a privacy screen made of a bookcase with storage.

Ménage balanced the historic ornament with modern interventions, like the rebuilt wood staircase and glass handrail.
