Seattle firm Wittman Estes designed this 1,300-square-foot cabin, which floats above a meadow on Whidbey Island.

The cabin's entrance is screened by tight knot cedar members, and a narrow vertical window gives a peek inside the cabin's meditation room.

The cabin was built using a pin foundation system, which elevates the structure above the ground and offers far less site disturbance than traditional concrete foundation systems.

The home's courtyard design allows for views to nature from every room.

Wittman Estes designed and custom fabricated the pulls on the front door and the refrigerator, which are in stainless steel.

The kitchen contains countertops and backsplash in stainless steel, which offers a muted softness to the space. "The stainless steel has a very thin profile, so it continues that theme of delicate, light expression which we wanted for the house,

The meditation room can also double as a guest room when the couple has visitors. Wide plank white oak floors throughout bring a softness to the cabin.

Located in the center of the home and doubling as a circulation corridor from the entrance to the main living areas, the multi-purpose room can be used for yoga and is clad in maple plywood walls that run throughout the cabin.

The multi-purpose room opens to the courtyard and looks over a small reflecting pool to the Puget Sound beyond.

In the bathroom, stainless steel countertops and porcelain tiles bring a sense of muted softness.

Hemlock cladding covers the front of Eric and Sondra McVeigh’s home in Phoenix.

The Kelleys furnished the cottage with help from Suzanne’s daughter Betsy Burbank of Betsy Burbank Interiors. Classic modernist icons, such as a Saarinen Womb chair for Knoll, a Herman Miller Eames lounge chair, and an Eileen Grey E1027 side table look at home alongside present-day pieces such as an Encore sofa (which handily folds down into a sleeping surface) from Room & Board and a Doka rug designed and produced by Stephanie Odegard. The Wohlert pendant lights from Louis Poulsen were designed by Vilhelm Wohlert in 1959, but grouped as such, they appear distinctly contemporary.

The bright, reflective surface amplifies natural light and bathes the interior in a warm glow even when the New England sun isn’t cooperating.

Working with project architect Kyle Bradley, Gray and Organschi started with the simplest of designs—a shed-type structure with a steeply canted single-pitch roof—and, as Organschi puts it, “started blowing it open and filling it with large areas of glass.”

The floors, walls, and ceilings are coated in FSC-Certified laminated bleached bamboo.
