A simple, hardscaped back patio is the site of many summer parties. The steps lead down to the firepit, where one feels increasingly embraced by the forest.

Joan’s main request, aside from a single-level residence, was that she would feel like she was “outside in and inside out” at all times. A sliding glass wall system along the back of the house lets her and Ken open their dining room up to the surrounding forest.

The back patio and fire-pit area are central entertaining spaces. When the weather is nice, homeowner Joan and Ken wheel their dining room table outside for parties and dinners with friends. The fire pit was built using a steel cut-off from a natural gas tank.

The original layout was very much of the time: a perfect midcentury modern flow, with a closed-off kitchen and a fire put in the floor. “They were cool but impractical spaces,” says Schaer.

In the kids’ bath, green hexagon tile from Heath Ceramics is a lovely backdrop for the walnut vanity.

Popham Design supplied the tiles in the bathrooms, were Gebhardt chose to incorporate more color.

The sitting room has a large bay window behind a yellow daybed that doubles as a sofa to save space. The bay window was upgraded with new glass during the renovation, but otherwise the existing home was retained as it was following an earlier renovation in 2016.

The playful, color-blocked Kardiel sideboard separates the dining and living areas.
