The Paul Agnew cast fireplace sits on a Kyash Cubes concrete plinth, to create definition between the living room, and kitchen and dining zones in the open plan. It being double-sided ensures that it can be enjoyed in the round. Placing the cooktop in the island was a specific request from the client. “They wanted to be able to talk to their guests while they cooked,” says Crisp. “It’s actually a small request that has a surprisingly big effect when entertaining and adds to the drama of the room.”

Holiday Home has a very spacious feeling despite its relatively compact volume.

The light colored birch interior paneling and movable lamellas provide a feeling of well-proportioned spaces.

The sea-facing side has a large covered deck. Thin slats of larch on this facade create a slimmer profile that contrasts the large floor-to-ceiling windows.

One of the key challenges was developing a scheme that would allow flexibility in its current use and also for the future. "The setup is currently perfect for my lifestyle," says owner-designer Uli Wagner. "In retrospect, it was also a solution during the pandemic and various lockdown levels—and I’m sure the setup would be favorable for other small businesses and their owners."

The sculptural new staircase, fronted with a faceted, Baltic birch handrail, features storage underneath that reduces clutter.

The handrail continues onto the mezzanine as a slanted balustrade that follows the upper level’s triangulated plan. "It looks like a complicated system, but on closer look, most of the surfaces are planar," says Amanda. "We did this to ensure that the project could be constructed as accurately as possible."

Tucked below the central staircase is a generously sized bathtub. "This involved creating a load-bearing structure under the floor to support the tub. It acts as a filter between the study area and bedroom and creates a very distinctive play of pure volumes," explains Rocca.

This previously abandoned granite 18th century farmhouse in the Scottish Highlands was restored and extended by Moxon. The larch and red metal clad addition references the gabled roofline of the original structure and is connected via a glass passageway.

This former fisherman’s cottage on the Caledonian Canal was transformed in 2009 by Reynolds Architecture Ltd., which implemented an open plan layout that faces the ocean. Timber cladding and large windows unite with the historic façade of the home.

The Old Farmhouse at Invergarry was built in 1868 and has been in the Grant family for more than a century. So, it was fitting that the current owners enlisted their architect daughter, Mhairi Grant, to renovate the home to suit their modern needs. Mhairi designed a double-height internal space while retaining the historical façade, and replaced the outbuildings with two contemporary guesthouses – connected to the main home through a glass corridor. The renovation, completed in 2014, also features a Corten tower to house the library with a third floor viewing platform.

The White House was originally built in the mid-1700s on the Isle of Coll, but was subsequently abandoned for over 150 years. With only ruins remaining, the owners enlisted WT Architecture to complete a renovation that would incorporate what was left of the former structure with a modern and low-impact home. The result is a stunning mix of the original stone façade with new large windows that frame the ocean view.
