A skylight was added to bring in more light, and the existing ceilings painted Benjamin Moore ‘Black Tar’ for contrast. The island pendant is the Schoolhouse Ray 17” Pendant and the stools are the Artek Aalto High Chair K65.

Before: The previous kitchen lacked a good run of counter space, since both the sink and stovetop were set in the middle of each leg.

Engelsman gave the kitchen an L-shaped layout with a large island workspace at the center, and pushed the tall storage into the garage, to create a wide circulation space to access the dining room and backyard.

Before: Caroline Hwang and Joel Speasmaker bought their Pasadena home in 2021. The existing kitchen was small, dark, and “boxed in” from the rest of the plan. “It just felt very sad,” says Caroline.

Boudreau covered the walls in unexpected dimensional mustard tile in two different patterns, both from Italian company Marca Corona. The penny rounds on the floor are a “Sliver Sage” color. A custom sconce from DL Design Works hangs above the mirror.

A Kirkbey bedframe from Bella Decor is flanked by Marte nightstands from Urban Outfitters. The Moroccan handwoven throw was found at local store Soukie Modern. The wall sconces are by L.A.-based Nino Shea, also on Etsy.

In the shower, the slat wall feeds into a convenient bench.

The coral and sage green color palette is continued here, via wall and floor tile from the Tile Bar. A custom white oak vanity with a quartz counter is completed with a Rejuvenation mirror and wall sconces from Cedar & Moss.

The solid support wall was swapped out for a wood slat wall. Dunn Edwards “Revival Rose,” an update on the terracotta color, was used to define the kitchen from the rest of the home.
