Danielle and Ely built the dining table and bench from pine—the legs of both are standard four-by-fours. "Nothing too fancy," they say, "but a good sanding job softens the corners, and the right stain goes a long way."

After combing through kitchen cabinets and finding nothing appealing that would fit their budget, Danielle and Ely decided to build everything themselves with lumber from the hardware store—sanding, staining, and sealing each piece. The countertops are plywood, as is the range hood surround.

When the couple bought the house, the dining room was set up here, but they swapped the layout so that the living room could advantage of the high ceilings and upgraded old windows for bigger, brighter views. Wide-plank hemlock wood flooring runs throughout, which the couple had professionally refinished (one of the few elements they didn’t DIY).

Thoughtfully placed succulents, ivy, and fiddle leaf fig trees accent The Barnhouse. For the plant wall, homeowners Danielle and Ely Franko mapped out the composition with tape to get the spacing just right. They also built the sliding barn door that shields a downstairs bedroom from view.

Complete with a decorative block wall and pink front door, the home's front facade looks picture-perfect against a backdrop of the desert landscape.
