The cabin’s kitchen includes a gas oven/stove combination and a hidden pull-out table, measuring 23 inches wide by 27 inches long. Solid wood countertops and drawer pulls from CB2 and IKEA completed the look. The living room area includes a brass and leather firewood tray from Ferm Living and ceramic pieces made by Eugenia, including coffee mugs and an incense holder.

A sensitivity to color and texture drove many design decisions. In the family room, a plywood climbing wall adds a playful touch.

The bathroom has an oak vanity, marble counter, and wall tiles from Concrete Collaborative.

The wall-mounted shelves are custom-designed by Stewart-Schafer.

Reilly, pictured here, deleted the original front door in order to create an expanse of uninterrupted wall in the living room. The existing slider is now the main entry point. She clad the exterior with planks marketed as a shou sugi ban product that reads as burned, knotty cedar. A new, corrugated metal roof replaced asphalt shingles.

The house is carefully inserted into its hilly site, allowing for pavilions and covered spaces of different types, as well as the vanishing-edge swimming pool.

By eliminating the drop ceilings, the architects opened up the ground level, which had been broken up into several rooms. This not only revealed the original beams, it also brought a much more expansive sense of space.

The front door is made from re-milled old leftover beams. A custom pivot mechanism allows the weight of the massive door to rest on a tiny point, allowing for almost friction-free operation.

De Jong & Co. designed the great room, as well as the dining chairs and table. The sofa, chairs, day bed, and coffee table in the living space are by Lawson-Fenning.

Structural lines are on full display in the bedroom, where ceiling beams and a plywood bed frame catch the eye.

Wooden beams extend beyond the structure to create shading trellises for the terraces at the front and the back of architect Ray Kappe's Los Angeles home.

Bright yellow tile now surrounds the tub picked out by the owners at the beginning of the remodel process. They wanted this room to feel "like a spa or a happy place to retreat to," says Reeves.

Reeves relocated the kitchen to the back wall and separated it from the adjacent dining area with a large, quartzite-covered island. "When extended family comes to visit, they do quite a bit of cooking. [They use] a lot of spices, and so there was concern about staining the countertop," says Reeves, who chose Luce de Luna quartzite, a variety that has low porosity. Fireclay glazed brick floor tile defines the space from the rest of the great room.

Now, the kitchen features new quartz countertops, custom cabinets, and all new appliances.
