Burnt cedar, Japanese cypress plywood, and mortar create a trio of contrasting yet simple surface textures that breathe a relaxed vibe into the Muji Hut.

Manufactured in Utah and installed on site in six weeks, this 1,100-square-foot Stillwater prefab home was craned into place over an existing barn in Napa, California.

Elevated into the trees, the open-plan living area opens up to nature via outdoor decks on either side.

Warm, natural cedar is used for the siding, railings, outdoor shower enclosure, and brise-soleil.

"On most days, from almost all vantage points, the boathouse reflects the forest or lake and is challenging to identify until you are immediately in front of it," says the firm. Pressure-treated SPF timber lines the outdoor deck.

Conceived as an escape from city living, this 2,580-square-foot prefab comprises two primary and 11 secondary modules, while the 290-square-foot guest cabins consist of single modules craned into place atop concrete piers.

Founded in 1958 by the Finnish Saarelainen brothers in Eastern Finland, Honka—known as Honkarakenne in Finland—was the first industrial manufacturer of log houses. Today, the pioneer brand has built almost 85,000 houses across the globe, including a quaint Scottish retreat for the Queen of England in 1969. Buhaus can be customized with a variety of finishes, and buyers can choose from a range of “editions”—from standard polished aluminum to black and even camouflage exteriors. The build time is approximately three months.

“The clients wanted a house that blended into nature,” notes Berensson.

The uneven edges of the elevated pine deck trace around the exposed rocks.

The clients encouraged the development of hemlock trees, which grow from the creek to the building site. They create a beautiful backdrop for the second story of the main building and deck overtop the master bedroom.

Designed for year-round use, the Rocky Brook weeHouse features covered and exposed spaces for enjoying the outdoors.

The timber construction is a nod to Coromandel’s timber logging heritage.

The Outdoor Room frames west-facing views of the Kaimai Range. “With timber-battened clear roofing above, it perfectly frames the forest views beyond, creating moments of uninterrupted connection and stillness with nature,” note the architects.

The modules were built to 90% completion inside a factory—fittings, fixtures, tiles, and more were installed before the units were trucked to the site and placed atop the foundation in five hours.

The 300-square-foot “reinterpreted” veranda is a sheltered room open to the outdoors.

The south-facing timber screen can be pushed to the west to open up the courtyard to the expansive landscape.

“I like that the house has a simple, almost abstract reading from the exterior—but the interior reveals an unexpected complexity of space, light, and aspect,” notes Ropiha.
