The suspension bridge entrance. “You’re sort of suspended over the landscape, walking over all these rhododendrons and stones and shrubs and trees that are below you,” says Sokol. “You’re kind of up in the treetops, and that’s how you arrive at the house.”

A southern view shows the exposed concrete foundation and entrance bridge. “As you approach and enter, the front door is at the top,” explains Sokol. “It’s a three-story house with the entrance on the third story, and the master bedroom in the basement—it’s sort of upside down.”

Whipplewood’s North facade. “There’s always people coming out to the house to hang around and be on the water. It was a house for one person, but it had to have a lot of social space—that was the idea with the cantilever decks and all the glass,” explains architect Eric Sokol.

After an unexpected disaster, a homeowner takes a rebuild into his own hands (literally).

LaFayette Studio, which helped with the interiors, selected a Holly Hunt fabric for built-in sofas, which are complemented by a rug from Rush House, a sconce by Brendan Ravenhill Studio, and a Swift ceiling light from Cedar & Moss.
