The bench Reilly made when she was a student at Rhode Island School of Design sits under industrial-style hooks in the entry.

The home's exterior has a fresh coat of paint, a new modern fence, and beautiful landscaping.

It feeds their backyard garden, which also features permeable paving rocks, a composting bin, and a surrounding fence made of knotty Western red cedar.

Trellis-like balcony railing cue the exposed timber frame extending over the house. The balcony and fence are made from sustainably harvested ipe wood.

The once-sloping space now has climbing vines, a slatted fence, and foxtail agaves.

Monkman’s house has a quiet presence, its front half hidden behind a fence of cedar two-by-sixes.

“The steep site lends itself to the ‘upside down’ configuration,” Harkness explains. “It certainly wouldn’t work as well if you could only access the house via the lower level, as this is through the bedroom zone, so we included two entrances. The upper one involves walking across a little bridge.”

Classic Ceramics wall tiles are combined with Caroma Cube ceramic basins in the bathrooms.

A primary suite was created on the new second level, complete with a freestanding tub.

A new office sits at the front of the house, and its moody walls and bookshelves contrast the other rooms' mostly light and neutral palette.

The study features floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors that bring the outdoors in. Space-saving custom walnut desks are accented by a Pixo Optical LED Table Lamp, an AJ table lamp, and a 1958 Eames Management Chair.

A landscape of native grasses designed by GSLA Studio complements the raw textures of the concrete-and-ipe front facade.

Moreland House

Inside the sleeping cabin, a fireplace built of local granite marks the midpoint between two bedrooms and a bathroom. The floors and walls are wrapped in warm-hued Douglas fir.
