The cantilevered addition was kept, and another bedroom added to the second floor over the existing house. Parks collaborated with Fort Structures to ensure that the third addition would sync with the rest of the house, replicating the window placement to make them sit between the roof beams, while still meeting current code and insulating the ceiling.

Hannah and Rami converted the second bedroom into an office, featuring a plywood-topped desk and shelving unit that Hannah made for their previous rental.

The structure was moved to a 37-acre site in Gilboa, New York, and revamped with five bedrooms, a library, and a lofty living room.

“We take houses built in the ’70s, ’80s, or ’90s, and we make them look like the 1870s or 1880s or 1890s,” explains Jack Alessio Pretto of Retroject Projects.

Instead of the separated space for living, dining, and cooking, the renovation has instead connected spaces that open up to the outdoors.

The front elevation was largely unchanged in scale and form, but the color of the siding, window frames, and roofing was darkened. The one exception is the front door, which serves as a light contrast.

Aleksandra and Daniel removed the gray stucco, which revealed the original lap siding underneath was rotting, and replaced it with fiber cement siding board from Hardie instead.

The single-volume home has been designed to appear to float over the lot on its deck. Ryan upgraded the existing foundation to support its passive design. "Originally, I wanted to make the whole house powered with wood pellets," he says. "But I decided against shoveling pellets in the snow. I'll get weird in a little bit less of a cold climate."
