Madera produced 14-inch-wide heart oak timber flooring in up to 24-foot lengths for the large first floor, which includes a kitchen and dining area that spans nearly 40 feet. The brand’s reputation for high-quality timber flooring is driven by its “forest to floor” approach, which allows them to oversee every aspect of the process, from the cutting of the oak at the partner mill in Bavaria, to the installation.

An enormous steel-framed skylight floods the upstairs hallway space and emphasizes the beauty of the natural grain in the oak flooring. “It’s one of my favorite moments of the project,” says architect Rob Diaz.

"On our first site visit, the client showed us a large Welsh dresser which was used for display. While we couldn’t find room for it in the lower ground floor, we did manage to reinterpret it’s functionality as a wall of oak shelving used for storage and display.

The glass house interior features a timber terrazzo floor made from recycled waste wood for a sense of playfulness, warmth, and harmony with the oak frame.

The design team specified durable, easy-to-maintain, nontoxic, recyclable, natural, and regenerative materials. The kitchen island is engineered quartz and the cabinets are from a local cabinetmaker.

Rather than adding a lot of big windows—a lot of glass runs counter to passive house principles of keeping the heat in—the design team carefully placed the vantage points to frame vignettes and bring the outside in.
