The concrete foundation was poured on top of a rock outcropping, so that the house would feel like part of the natural features of the site.

The homeowners spent $125,000 refreshing the ’70s home with finishes and decor that make it feel like a beloved family retreat.

The sliding door is a slim-frame aluminium piece finished in matt black. Outside, the patio is finished with a light grey porcelain stone for ease of maintenance. In the dining area, two classic George Nelson pendant lights illuminate the working zones of the kitchen prep spaces.

The 1969 summer house needed a gut remodel—so Carisa Salerno and Aaron Levin rebuilt it piece by piece: “In the end, we feel like we built a sculpture, not a house.”

"In some ways the strongest attributes of the house are probably the outside spaces,” says Court. The original cedar deck was replaced with Kebony decking that wraps around a century-old cherry tree. A pair of Andy rockers from Mamagreen face an ottoman by Kenneth Cobonpue. The accordion doors are a NanaWall SL-60 system that allows the main room of the guesthouse to open completely to the deck.

The home’s exterior siding is made of a combination of blue-gray shiplap cedar and gray cement board.

The design team retained the old supports, which now frame the kitchen. Jessica picked DeVol cabinets and systems for their traditional-meets-streamlined style.

Set in a seaside town, this revamped cottage is bathed in natural light and warm finishes.

A subtle tile backsplash centers the equally bright cabinetry and island.

The apartment above the garage received a dormer to enlarge the interior footprint.

The team removed the outdated exterior detailing and replaced it with vertical strips of Kebony Clear siding and a Freedom Gray copper standing seam metal roof. “Kebony offered that same sort of silvery weathering that would get us that [Cape] aesthetic, and the feel of this house being set in the landscape,” says Yoon.

“We had the brainy idea to combine all of the crazy colors throughout the house into a color palette going during the stairs,” says Claudia. “So now, when you walk into the house, you are hit with a beautiful presentation on the staircase of all the colors you are going to see throughout the house.”

Sitting lightly above the eelgrass, this tiny dwelling serves as a port of entry for a family getaway on the Salish Sea.

In the living room, a Malm fireplace sits on a yellow powder-coated steel table that matches the bookshelf ladder leading to the loft. Jagoda designed the table with space underneath to store firewood.

The builders created new, more expansive decks for the cabin and employed larger windows from Marvin.

In his renovation of Kate Brien Kitz and David Kitz’s Los Angeles home, architect Andrew Hall reinterpreted the original gable roof and siding. Landscape designers Mary Lange and Molly Funk transformed the yard with drought-tolerant plants. The walkway decking is from Kebony kebony, the Seaspray paint from Benjamin Moore, and the front door hardware from Emtek.
