Spread over 4,000 square feet, the home includes two bedrooms, and three and a half bathrooms. “With the ten-foot ceilings, we wanted windows that could extend to the ceiling to emphasize the loft-like nature of the main spaces,” says Angaran.

Barenhaus (Bear House) is a deliberate and exciting residence hidden on 6.4+ acres in New Hope, PA. Representing a next-generation Bucks County farmhouse, its open, light-filled interiors stretch across approximately 7, 400 square feet with a dramatic three-story floating steel and wood stairwell.

Its floor plan presents a modern layout designed for functionality and comfort with emphasis on important spaces. It serves an art collector well, with gallery-like wall space, adjustable Lutron lighting and pristine wood floors throughout. High ceilings, picture windows and clerestory windows bring in natural light. At its heart is an open gourmet kitchen/dining/gathering room with one of the largest kitchen islands you've seen, able to seat 8 comfortably. The kitchen is a beautifully functional space with two full-size, built-in Thermador refrigerator/freezers, two sinks and dishwashers built in to the island, a pantry and a six-burner Thermador range. A glass-walled wine room visible from the kitchen island lets guests ogle your collection. The kitchen is full open to the dining area.

Add the soaring living room with fireplace and two sets of French doors opening to a 114' wraparound deck with an outdoor fireplace, and it's easy to start thinking about parties that spill outside in three seasons. Private quarters include a first-floor room with garden access that can serve as a study/office or first-floor main suite bedroom as it is en suite and has a walk-in closet.

On the second floor is a sizable main bedroom suite with walk-in closet and bath with oversized glass-wall shower and double wall-mount vanities. Two additional en suite bedrooms and a laundry room complete the second floor. The home~s walkout, daylight lower level provides a large flexible space ready to serve as a media room, gym, play space or, with the existing bedroom and full bath, a suite for an in-law or au pair. A powder room and mechanicals room is also on this level.

Two sets of sliders open to a covered patio and the rear yard, which can accommodate a pool with ease. The detached three-car garage has a sizable loft space above, ready for finishing or storage. For outdoor relaxation choose from the full-length deck, the outdoor fireplace patio or a grassy side yard.

In 1986 Judd parted ways with DIA and the Chinati Foundation was born. Here we see one of two artillery sheds that Judd rehabbed with a new Quonset-style roof and new quartered windows—additions that doubled the proportions of both structures and provided a light-filled space for his 100 milled-aluminum works.

Prince Concepts tapped EC3 to build True North, a live/work community of prefabricated Quonset huts, each oriented to maximize daylight and framed communal outdoor spaces. “I wanted to give people affordable, but also inspired, space,” says Kafka.

The whole project comprised only three months of design, two months of production (some 90 percent of which was completed at a Buenos Aires factory), one day of assembly, and five days of adjustments. The structure consists of just four 9-foot-8-inch-by-19-foot-7-inch modules supported by a foundation plate. “If we want to move it, we can,” says Teresa. “We could get a crane and disassemble it and then reassemble it on the coast.”

Even the water in the courtyard pool comes from the on-property cistern, which collects rainwater throughout the year. "Last summer, I think the kids were in the pool twice a day at least," says Jonah. "We lived in that courtyard."

Another move that reduces the house's environmental impact is the inclusion of photovoltaic panels on the roof. The panels generate enough energy to offset 95% of the house’s consumption.
