A 580-square-foot terrace complete with outdoor kitchen sits above a new garage. The terrace’s design was inspired in part by New York’s High Line, says Rick, with its varied and immersive plantings, expanded steel-mesh guardrail, and lighting beneath ipe handrail caps.

In the living room, soft-hued seating arranged in a circle is perfect for entertaining. On the far wall, Sunrise Over the Hudson, by Erik Koeppel, competes with the stunning scenery outside. “Charlie was interested in skewered views, like looking straight up at the sky and then out to the woods,” says Rick.

87 pieces of optical glass—each measuring 13.1 feet tall and 3.3 inches square in cross section—are aligned vertically at the front facade. The high specific gravity of the glass ensures sufficient sound insulation against the noise of the city.

“The warmth of the plants and trees is felt in the home,” the homeowners share. The garden includes a tall Iroha maple tree (left), an evergreen Horutonoki tree (right), along with moss and ferns at the base.

“The garden activates seclusion from the mundane world, creates tranquility in the city, and liberates the mind in the passage between the mundane world and nature,” says Principal Architect Hiroshi Nakamura. “When people feel stressed, they can look out the window at the garden and transfer their mind to it.”

The custom walnut vanity from Northcoast Modern is topped with quartz. A new window brings in more light and a view of the river and trees.

The first phase of the remodel enlarged the footprint in the main bathroom, which pairs marble hex tile on the floor with Fireclay tile on the walls. The mirrors were $506 from Rejuvenation, and the sconces are by Nino Shea Design ($660 for three).

While the prefabs do not come with plumbing fixtures, appliances, wall trims, cabinets, or waste water systems, customized options can be purchased through CABN.

The steel-frame structure makes this prefab durable for all weather.

The Signature House is 227-square-feet and can be used year-round.

For the silk stair runner, Geremia Design sent a full-scale template of the stairs to Atelier Février in France for a bespoke design that was handmade in Nepal. “The colors of the dark navy ground and bright blue pointillist patterning were dyed to match Pantone colors, which we pulled from colorful moments across the project palette,” says Willemsen.

In the relocated kitchen, on the annex's ground floor, a whole wall, from cabinets to backsplashes (as well as the adjacent island), was painted green, as if they're single pieces of furniture.

Rakks shelves in the primary bedroom hold many books, including those written by James.

The cut-out in the oak cabinetry denotes a sleeping nook for the couple’s cat Mitten.
