Each child has their own sleeping nook in the “Sibling Lair.”

The new vanity is made of ACX Pine Plywood topped with decorative laminate by Abet Laminati. Schoolhouse Alabax sconces are mounted on the custom mirror. The floor tile is from Daltile.

A highlight of the overhaul is the floor-to-ceiling glass on the north side, which includes a five-panel bifold door. The door opens to the couple’s favorite area of the house, the backyard. The deck is shaded by the cantilevered roof, and Ren planted drought-resistant brush amid the existing oak trees.

The couple refinished the original Fir floors, and planed and sanded down the original moldings and white-washed them. They painted the original fireplace with black matte paint and stenciled a contrasting glossy pattern on the tile. Jason designed and built the coffee table, and the walnut console, which has laser-cut perforated doors. (There’s an inset, upholstered seat for sitting when donning shoes that the cat loves to sleep in.)

Renovation

This view shows how the spaces in the great room connect to each other. The architects cut a light well through the center of the home to bring daylight all the way down to the kitchen.

Beebe Skidmore opened up the space to create a giant, light-filled great room.

The renovation didn't introduce new square footage, however every room in the house benefited in some way from the remodel.

By changing the roofline, Beebe Skidmore introduced light and usable space to the third floor. "It was not a lot of extra space, but we got headroom," explains Beebe.

A custom concrete planter is now home to a 70-year-old olive tree. The couple reconfigured the front porch to allow for a straight path between the front door and the driveway for better circulation.

The new bathroom has Cle tile and custom limestone sinks that Emily found in a chance search online. "Marblebasinhub.com. They have incredible, incredible sinks," she says.

A new trough sink carved from Caesarstone is the same material showcased in the kitchen, and WOW Cottage tile clads the shower.

A thick, poured concrete slab forms the surface of the large island and waterfalls to the floor on one side.
