The couple left the walls exposed, but painted them white. “Wallpaper covered the raw block walls,” says Andrew. “There was a heaviness to it all.”

In Mongolia’s Erdenedalai District, herders Nergui Araldiipurev and Tsegmed Davaasamnuu set up camp with more than 800 livestock on a site where they generally live from the end of October until mid-June each year. The couple’s live-in ger, the traditional dwelling used by Mongolian herders, sits near a guest ger and a storage ger and container where they leave some of their belongings when they move from their winter site to the summer pastures. A solar panel allows them to power a TV (served by a satellite dish) and a freezer.

Originally a maze of small, dark rooms typical of Victorian terraces, the house was in need of a rethink. “They were designed for a different way of life,” says Alex. “We wanted something more open, more active—a space where the kids could cartwheel through.”

Designed for extra seating and to complement the small window, the built-in bench has become the family’s go-to spot. The Artemide mini Anglepoise lamp (£400) sheds light on nighttime reading. Other lampshades, bought while traveling (to places including Bangkok), serve as cherished mementos.

White walls and light-hued furnishings match the airiness of the home's design. Douglas made the dining table from maple milled on site atop a Corbusier LC 6 base. A Heracleum pendant by Moooi hangs above it.

Tom purchased a beat up (but still functioning) wooden scissor sculpture at an online circus auction. Covered in peeling baby blue paint, some expressed doubts, but he had a vision. Inspired by the work of Claes Oldenburg, Tom approached local artist Teddy Noggle who sanded it down, built the pedestal box it’s placed on, and painted the sculpture bright yellow.

Thomas loves crazy powder rooms, but leans towards softer tones for master bathrooms. Here, she adds a bit of glam with chrome Atrio fixtures by Grohe and antique brass Hinsdale sconces by Hudson Valley Lighting. “I am so happy with how this midcentury-inspired pattern using Fireclay Tile in Daisy and Sea Glass turned out. It’s dramatic, but still soothing and soft. The sconces reminded me of modernist versions of soap bubbles, and I loved them for a bathroom environment.”

The bathroom features a soaking tub by American Standard with Grohe fixtures, including a rain showerhead. Though she's not much of a bath person, she wanted to make it feel like a retreat with a personal spa. “The soothing color palette from Fireclay Tile plus little touches from The Little Market really set the tone...I made sure to include my favorite skincare and haircare products by True Botanicals and Parachute Home. The little bath tub tray has a lovely candle, matches, bath salts, even a little notch to put your glass of wine—everything you need for a long, luxurious bath.” She tops it off with an abundance of fluffy towels from Parachute. A large vanity has Semihandmade walnut covers, connecting the modern bathroom to the wood textures found throughout the cabin.
