Both renovated bathrooms are outfitted with new Heath Cermics tile.

The couple sourced midcentury furniture and dishware from Toronto dealers like Mid Century Modern Toronto and Inabstracto. They also loved Etsy sellers Mimi La Rouleuse, Mid Age Vintage DE, Happy Moose Vintage, Mrs. Marvellous, and The Art of Object.

Kitchens and bathrooms typically need to be updated every 10 to 15 years—and it’s an exciting opportunity to transform the spaces you spend a lot of time in. The robust black marbled veining of the Cambria Rose Bay™ design used in this bathroom adds a striking abstract element to the room.

For the couple’s shared office, which is windowless, the team installed backlit panels to give the illusion of daylight entering the room.

"Radical sustainability

Floor-to-ceiling glass in the living room makes it feel as though the room merges with the natural setting.

The main bathroom uses slabs of travertine contrasted against white subway tiles. “The master bathroom, which is cream and white with brass fixtures, is a favorite space,” says resident Fei Zhong. “We spent a lot of time scouting the right tiles and stone and decided on travertine. It creates a really peaceful space in a house with two small children.”

“The dining room wallpaper [Cole & Son’s Forest] helped bring the outdoors in, which was a parallel play on the large windows selected by the architects. Selecting wallpapers that had a forced perspective also provided a sense of depth for spaces like the dining room and powder room,” says Santos.

The couple intervened very little in the living room besides nudging the front door down the wall a foot—making room for the kitchen on the other side of the wall—and refinishing the fireplace tile in an inky black.

The couple streamlined and widened the decorative arch at the entry to the room so it synched with the living room ceilings, and straightened the walls to the ceiling for a cleaner look.

The living area retains the home's original fireplace and masonry wall, with new sliding doors next to the kitchen that connect to the side yard. The sofa and side chair are from Ariake, the ottoman table from Hem, and the rug is from Hay.
