A long, linear window brings light into the Heath Ceramics tile-covered shower, which is curbless, so as to accommodate aging-in-place.

Now, a walk-in shower and soaking tub are tucked under the roof line.

The new ensuite bathroom includes a spacious two-person shower. Jared installed the cement tiles, consulting a handful of online videos for instruction.

In the kitchen, minimalism prevails. Jared notes that the use of plywood was loosely inspired by design seen in the 1960s Sonoma County Sea Ranch community. "It's something that one of my heroes, [architect] Barbara Bestor has done very well," he says.

On nice days, doors can be opened for indoor/outdoor flow.

Curtis completely overhauled the shelving, changing the shapes of the niches and covering them in micro-cement.

In the primary bath, custom oak cabinetry sits below wall sconces from Allied Maker. The freestanding tub is from Barclay and the tile is LaNova.

Not rushing the design process, Claire strove to find a balance between respecting the home’s history and making it her own. “Every room tells a story,” she says.

The bathroom is finished in simple stucco with bent copper plumbing fixtures and oversized terrazzo tile. Niches in the wall accommodate bathing supplies and provide a convenient foothold for leg-shaving.

A hardworking structural beam also serves as tableware storage and conceals lighting. Finger pulls instead of cabinet hardware keep the focus on the clean lines of the kitchen. Holes in the baseboard act as a vent.

The adjoining garage also doubles as a recreational room, with a vintage roadster and nearby pool table lending some fun.
