The home's great room offers a balance of coziness and spaciousness.

"This is my favorite space," Melissa says of their bedroom. "I spend a lot of time in our bedroom reading or watching the kids play outside. It is very cozy and peaceful." Brian built a playhouse for the kids, which his daughter uses as an art studio.

Tile by Zia Tile runs along a wall of the upstairs bathroom. The cabinets are by Cabinets quick, and the floor tile is by Concrete Collaborative.

A dip of grey paint on the stair hints at the updated spaces above.

The living room’s original altar-topped fireplace and Sante Fe-style plaster were easy sells for Mandy, who made sure they were preserved during the renovation.

Big Wood Residence

A skylight brings light down through the enlarged stair opening. The door is original and was hand stripped by the owner. Wood floors are form Vermont Plank Flooring and were finished on-site. Daybed was built by the owner.

Three enlarged openings in the rear façade allow for access and views to the yard without requiring substantial and costly structural modifications.

The kitchen cabinetry is from Reform and is painted a subtle gray to complement the hand painted BDDW tiles. Custom wood shelving allows for display and materially ties the kitchen to the window surrounds. The Lina Bo Bardi- inspired stools were built by the owner.

The social spaces are at the rear of the yard, including turf for the kids’ play and a cooking and dining area, all tucked behind a custom concrete planter. The raised beds, including on top of the fence, are for herbs, as the homeowners are avid cooks.
