Birch veneer plywood and a sealed concrete floor provide a simple and cohesive material palette for the ADU. An innovative HVAC system—the LG Art Cool Gallery—allows original artwork to be placed at the front of the wall-mounted unit.

Linen curtains were chosen from the Barcelona-based Yutes textile company for their quality and simple Mediterranean aesthetic.

Mulberry trees shade the side facade. In winter they shed their leaves and let the sun into the exterior.

The garden was designed with as sustainable approach and a water-saving ethos. Indigenous trees and shrubs were planted and gravels covers the ground.

In the living room, a blanket from Mercredi in Bali now hangs over a sofa from Ikea equipped with Bemz's Sergel Skinny Legs. "When we moved down here, we had this giant empty wall and I was like, 'I know what can go here,'" Rachel recalls. The Beni Ourain rug was sourced on Etsy.

The kitchen originally featured vintage appliances, but they were no longer up to code and were replaced by SMEG appliances that match the retro vibe and color palette of the renovated rental home. “I am obsessed with the orange Smeg fridge and the color-blocked Reform CPH cabinets we custom built around them,” says interior designer Dani Dazey. “We also color-blocked the appliances to match the eclectic retro feel.”]

The Strands x Dwell collection by Concrete Collaborative has been used on the floors of the three bedrooms. “Each room has a different color scheme and feel, yet matches this tile perfectly,” says interior designer Dani Dazey. “Using the collection in multiple spaces and in different ways gives uniformity and harmony to the house.”

“One of my big ways of creating harmony in interiors is by replicating colors and themes throughout the space and having an anchor to tie them together,” explains interior designer Dani Dazey. “In this case, it’s color and midcentury modern inspiration.”

The living area opens out to the garden, which features an entertaining area with a fire pit, hot tub, and sun lounging deck surrounded by a cacti garden.

The combined kitchen and dining room, featuring two pieces of family-heirloom furniture, feel spacious thanks to a vaulted ceiling; it and the walls are clad in Douglas fir.

One of the bathrooms in Barbara and Karel’s apartment is clad in colorful tile in a nod to their daughters’ love of Minecraft.

Barbara treasures every piece she’s collected with Karel—whether it’s an editioned Candida Höfer print or a tiny ceramic dog brought back from abroad. “They are very tacky, but that’s what I like,” she says.

Barbara and Karel needed to furnish their new 3,875-square-foot apartment essentially from scratch. “We went overboard with the shopping,” Barbara admits, gesturing to the Francesco Binfaré couch in the living room. “In our older house, the rooms were much smaller. If we put that there, it would be the entire apartment.”

“If we were questioning the hospitality of these pods, or the toughness of them, a three year old boy will test the toughness of anything,” laughs Mark.

The Cozumel tiny home is a mobile dwelling with a luminous interior.
