Architect João Completo used a limited material palette in the house he designed for his parents, a choice he appreciates in many homes featured in Dwell. Birch plywood and concrete are featured throughout. “The language is very coherent in every space, which gives it a sense of fluidity,” Completo says. “It feels a bit bigger than it is because the materials are the same everywhere.”

The family loves to cook and opted for a statement piece as the kitchen island made of volcanic stone with burners that emerge directly from the surface.

Natural light was very important for homeowners, incorporated though plentiful clerestory glass and indoor-outdoor access.

The wedge-shaped shower in the primary bathroom glimmers with sunlight from a full-height window. The tiles are from SomerTile, and the fixtures are from Grohe.

A guest room features a bed cover from Treko and a plaster lamp from Blackman Cruz. The artwork is by Donnie Molls from Coup d’Etat.

The dark steel gives way to a pale interior with reclaimed maple floors and marine-grade Russian birch walls and ceilings.

The landing looks out on the dining nook below. Although the couple were required to build on their previous home’s footprint, they were allowed to increase the building’s overall square footage by 25 percent, which brought it to 2,316.

Original louvered windows add charm to the dining room while making the most of the warm Florida climate.

Antonio designed the console table using a zebrawood plank that once adorned the fireplace, which was removed during the renovation. In the dining area beyond, pendants by Torbjörn Vejvi hang above the Kayu teak table from Design within Reach.

Ceramic pendants by Courtney Duncan and a yellow sculpture by Antonio join a Hay sectional in the living room. Antonio crafted the stained glass panel at left.

Displaying canvases by Steven Criqui (left) and Antonio Adriano Puleo (right), the transformed living room features a sculptural ceiling accented by a grate that brings light from the skylight in the expanded attic space above. Puleo designed the geometric print on the bench, which was made by James Melinat of Reigns Studio, who also built the custom cabinetry and bookshelves. Trifold sliders from Fleetwood open to the rear yard.

Before Ester Bruzkus Architekten transformed the top-floor apartment into a cozy home for a Berlin couple, the empty apartment had floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides and exposed concrete walls on the other sides. Rather than create a series of conventional rooms that would close off the sense of openness, a single millwork box was positioned away from the walls to make rooms between it and the existing walls.

The dining area features a custom table designed by Taylor Knights and built by Tescher Forge, paired with Gubi beetle chairs in a dark green velvet upholstery. The pendant lighting is from Great Dane Furniture and the framed photograph, Mineral Matter IX, is by Australian artist Brooke Holm.
