The architects reorganized the floor plan to insert a new indoor stair, which is bordered by a screen of steel cables grounded in stones the couple collected on their beach. The columnar lantern is by Stefan Gulassa, a local artist who made many of the home’s light fixtures.

The site was previously owned by a couple who donated the original home for aged care use in 1968. In 2016, the three-storey, 24-unit building was privately sold, demolished and subdivided into six separate lots. These were sold with approved homes on them, and this site was the last one to be developed. Architect Jeffrey Bokey-Grant then convinced the clients to design a new home that would be suited to their specific needs.

In the bathroom, the architects mounted a Kohler sink on a sloped, custom-slate countertop. Since the stone doesn’t hold up well in water, the architect switched to black mosaic tile in the shower. The faucets are from Cabano’s Century series.
