In fall, the color of this backyard in Charlottesville, Virginia, changes daily with the foliage. Elizabeth Birdsall marvels how new outdoor spaces on her property, like a patio furnished with upholstered seating from Gloster, make enjoying the woods an easy experience: “It’s like comfortable camping, all the time.”

A verdant oasis awaits in the backyard, complete with a bespoke jacuzzi and jetted pool.

Located in a forested, countryside area near a lake and vegetable garden, the cabin was designed by São Paulo architect Silvia Acar as a simple space for sleeping, cooking, and reconnecting with nature.

The interior paint is Roman Clay from Portola Paints & Glazes.

“The design for the house emerged from walking the property. We imagined that as we climbed up from the beach, we’d see little peeks of our home from behind the trees,” says Brad Horn, architect and resident.

The bedroom space is separated from the living area by a 12' tall by 8' long shelving unit, custom made by Jordan's dad.

A Hay pendant hangs above the bed, which is from the Brooklyn-based studio Akron Street. Jordan's friend, furniture designer Pete Deeble, made the record credenza, and the artwork is by photographer Slim Aarons.

A low wooden bench running along both sides of the extension is both functional and attractive.

The D-Fin House gets its name from a loft space that projects from the main level like the skeg of a vintage surfboard. Owner Mitch Marks uses the area as an office. Steely designed the pine bookcase, and the Eames Group chair is from Herman Miller. A Haiku ceiling fan from Big Ass Fans ushers in fresh air and cool seaside breezes.

Jorge’s parents’ house is across the patio. “We believe we’re onto something here in terms of a societal shift,” says Jorge. “Not everyone wants to live in an apartment or condo. They can live in a home that’s part of a family compound.”

Zachary designed a new cabinet in walnut to anchor the room. The wood tones are a warm counterpoint to the butter-yellow sofa. The coffee table belonged to the owners.

The remodeled kitchen now boasts two sinks, a large eat-in island, and custom cabinetry.
