The focus of the renovation was the kitchen, where the textures of tiles and brickwork play backdrop to considered, bespoke carpentry.

Sam and Stephanie designed and fabricated the custom sink cabinet together, joining it with a Kohler Riverby Sink for $1,233.00 and a California Faucets Descanso Series with knurled handle in burnished brass ($1,786.00). The two-room coastal cabin was in massive disrepair when Nick kicked off the renovation. Rebuilding the windows, doors, framing, and floors, Nick brought his close eye for detail and sought to recreate interior elements in the spirit of the original midcentury design, but with a contemporary edge.

A view of the lounge from the stairs reveals the couple's wood stove, which is perfect for peak demand.

Rooms were designed with flexibility in mind.

Makelike wallpaper in the “Tangle” pattern ensconces the room. A wall-mounted Wayfair sink with a brass faucet from Kohler was hung with a Blu-Dot mirror and the Branch Sconce by Worley’s Lighting, a South Carolina studio.

A Clad Home white sofa joins a Lulu & Georgia coffee table and two cane chairs by Leanne Ford for Crate & Barrel. The artwork over the sofa was commissioned from a friend to complete the space.

Once the awkward back staircase was removed, the designers made way for a new family room downstairs.

In the bedroom, a party wall is a backdrop for the bed, and there’s a generous walk-in closet on the other side of it.

The bedrooms are just big enough so the family gathering spaces can hold everyone together comfortably. The bed was built by Blake's dad.

The fireplace was kept as a nod to the old house, as “it was beautiful and didn't need a lot of work,” says Berg. It has the original brick with a micro cement surround.

The Uphill Utilitarian sits at the back of a sloping site, which the owners left as natural as possible, while adding a small seating area.

The powder room has seen its fair share of different shades; now it boasts a bold pink hue.

Green mosaic tiles clad the shower and tub in the main bathroom.

Coffered ceilings add dimension to the airy entry.

Cabinetry maker Forest Designs used birch plywood to craft the U-shaped kitchen island, which is topped with quartz from Floform. The Ziro floor tiles in Gris are from Navarti and the contemporary metal edge pulls are from Richelieu. The appliances are from Whirlpool.
