Before: In 2016, Matthew and Holly bought this 1904 home in Seattle, Washington. It had been remodeled and added onto beyond its original size and style in the hundred-plus years since its construction.

Two art studios adjoin a central volume at this work/live residence built from terracreto (sustainable concrete), glass, and painted steel just outside of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Residents Austin and Lida Lowrey, retired design and museum professionals, collaborated with their two daughters—Sheridan, an artist, and Elizabeth, an architect—to design the structure as a place for creative contemplation.

With the home’s relatively compact footprint and efficient floor plan comprising two bedrooms and two bathrooms over a single living level, smart use of space was critical. "Built-in storage everywhere [is] number one," says Melanie. A pantry and storage drawers are tucked under the stairs.

White-washed pine on the walls and ceiling, and birch plywood on the custom cabinetry meld seamlessly together. The floors are laminate.
