Feldman Architecture opens up a dark and cramped seaside house with big windows and a healthy dose of wood.

The panels were fabricated using sand quarried from the site, which was mixed with a small amount of cement and dried in layers, each showing a slightly different hue.

The walnut-framed bay window is a favorite spot for the children. “My eldest son, the moment he arrives at home after school, makes a beeline for that pop out,” says Bonnie. “He wants to eat his lunch right there build his Legos in that space.”

Perforated steel and a glass guardrail on the stairwell allow the skinny second-floor hallway to feel as open as possible.

Mature pothos vines drip over the banister of the loft, cascading down to the first floor. "It’s the first thing people notice," says Melanie.

Archway details continue into bathroom where stone floors, a custom vanity, built-in shelving, and a large tadelakt soaking tub await.

In the shower, the Japanese porcelain tiles are all a slightly different finish, creating a shimmering effect. "It feels like movement," says Andrew.

The team installed narrow strips of Hardie cement board in a shiplap application, to give the rear facade depth.

The firm color-blocked the bathrooms, using peach dimensional tile here with terrazzo flooring.

Virtue Joinery built the custom cabinetry, composed of plywood stained a soft grey.

The counter and backsplash are made up of a marble slab leftover from a bigger job.

The ground floor hosts what is currently converted into a colorful children's room, which includes an indoor rock-climbing wall. A bathroom and laundry room lie beyond.

A hallway “bridge” allows light to flow down from the skylights above. “By detaching the hallway from that wall, it allowed that light to really sink down into all the floors as much as possible,” says Jennifer, who notes that it reaches the ground level. “And keeping the railings light and the stairs as open risers are all ways of getting that light down.”

Black steel rails look sharp against the exposed brick wall, which was painted white in keeping with the high contrast palette.

The design team retained the old supports, which now frame the kitchen. Jessica picked DeVol cabinets and systems for their traditional-meets-streamlined style.

Limestone floors inside and out unify the living spaces.
