You enter at the very center of the building, “right at the groin, the crux, the crank,” as Braithwaite describes it, approaching along a gangway clad in weathering steel.

The couple’s architect, Dan Kaplan of Bowerbird Architects, envisioned a modern addition in this corner of the building that is clad in standing seam metal, to house the two new bathrooms and preserve the original architecture.

Pablo built the new addition into the slope in front of the house to blend it with the surrounding landscape. At the back of the property sits a greenhouse and a garage, the latter of which has solar panels on the roof.

Large windows and minimal furnishings in every bedroom help retain a tranquil, site-forward aesthetic.
