“I wanted you to come into a place that was inviting, but with a muted warmth,” says Kara of the decision to immerse the dining room in Farrow & Ball’s Green Smoke, including walls, ceiling, cabinetry, and fireplace, the latter with a relocated mantel. Set in the heart of the Hudson Valley, this 60-acre estate includes a three-bedroom home, a guest cottage, and a detached workshop.

A wide driveway leads to the one-level painted property, the facade of which pops against the encompassing leafy trees.

Pine plywood sourced from Specialised Panel Products has been fitted between the dining rafters and under the kitchen rafters, as well as in door frames throughout the ground floor.

The material palette was investigated early on, along with a variety of layout options. The end product reflected both the homeowner’s style and the unique character of the home.

In the living room and kitchen, soft-but-tough Expanko cork flooring provides comfort and stands up to dings and scuffs. While the kitchen was designed primarily with Surendra and a caregiver’s needs in mind, it also accommodates the five-foot-radius of a wheelchair.

Also sited in the main pavilion is the primary suite, which overlooks Port Cygnet and offers direct outdoor access.

The terraced wooden deck offers plenty of space for private outdoor entertaining.

Likewise, the guest bathroom boasts Fireclay tiles and Kohler fixtures.

For a family of four, Ueda Design Studio restores the luminous-yet-drafty midcentury home of Alden Mason with warm materials and sensible restraint.

The design team converted the formal dining room into a unique indoor/outdoor bar. A wooden ceiling and accordion doors connect the little lounge area right to the deck when the weather’s nice, and close it off into a cozy den when the nights start to cool.

The backsplash is made of large cement tiles that were sawed into smaller pieces and rearranged to give a mottled look. An appliance garage hides the "non-sexy things you want to put away," laughs Andrew—the blender, the toaster, and so on.

The house was built near a sometimes-noisy highway, but robust insulation and windows help minimize sound filtration, as does a foyer and hallway fronting the building.

"The forest outside our windows brings us joy from the moment we wake up in the morning," says Jonah, "while we watch the hawks and birds and drink our coffee to the period of dusk when the deer pass through on their evening foraging and the fox come out of hiding."
