A pitched-timber pergola that integrates interior and exterior is the defining feature of a kitchen extension by Benjamin Wilkes for the circa 1908 home where James and Kate Greenfield live with their two children in South London. The Tigra Multi brick is from Traditional Brick and Stone.

Owner Stacey Hill was instantly drawn to this shipping container’s existing blue color and chose to leave it unchanged. The fireplace-adjacent bench seating is upholstered in William Yeoward Alverdia fabric in Ocean, complementing the teal accents in the adjoining dining room and kitchen.

Upon entering the house, one immediately sees right through to the rear garden from the main corridor.

The eco-friendly home is equipped with rainwater harvesting, hydronic heating, and a compost and vegetable garden.

WARC Studio founder Andrew Wilson came up with a design solution that would open up the interiors to the garden and pool, but still protect the home from the harsh afternoon sun from the west.

Norman Millar and Judith Sheine designed the built-ins in the living-dining area, which were made from vertical-grain Douglas fir. Vintage Dutch industrial chairs are arranged around a black walnut dining table that, like the madrone coffee table, is by Urban Hardwoods.
