Sutherland added a skylight to new primary bath, which is located behind the couple’s bedroom. The custom maple vanity has a white concrete top and Kohler Purist fixtures. The glass Roku wall tile in Rain Gloss is by Walter Zanger, and the ceramic floor tile is Original Style Moonbeam penny round. The new door is a copy of the cabin’s original interior doors. “I love how the wood door plays against the modern tile,” Sutherland says.

Organized around a central courtyard, the home’s three modules are oriented to maximize views of downtown Marfa; 20-foot-deep piers drilled below each concrete footing root the structure to the site and help stabilize it against West Texas winds, which can reach 120 miles per hour.

The cabin’s small footprint minimizes interference with its natural surroundings. Three stacked stories give the family plenty of living space with living and dining on the top floor; two bedrooms on the main level; and a bunk room, garage and game room in the basement.

At Lake|Flato’s Clinton Corners residence, Bensonwood’s off-site fabrication enabled an aggressive eight-month construction schedule in the middle of New York’s winter.

For the open-plan first floor, interior designer Sarah McFadden paired a round Mexican olive wood table by Taracea with Nuvola chairs covered in ash gray leather. A half-sized container, painted in Smoke Embers by Benjamin Moore, serves as a pantry/scullery.

On the other side of the entry gate, the containers’ raw corrugated shells are exposed and topped with a gravel-ballasted roof that juts past the envelope to limit solar gain.

“We did a lot of things for us that some clients are hesitant to do, like shou sugi ban. Our idea is that the house and materials will weather over time. They will change, but that’s part of the beauty of it,” says Maria. Here, the double wall lamps are by DCW Editions. Real Good Chairs in copper line by Blu Dot surround the wooden table by Ethnicraft.
