The LumiPod is equipped with Rockwool insulation, exterior rain sheeting, and a moisture protection film. A Toshiba reversible air conditioning system is installed by default for heating and cooling.

Now, an eight-foot sliding door brings light into the kitchen and enables fluid movement between inside and out. The wider steps can serve as seats during a party, and they make for a graceful transition to the yard.

The exterior was sealed through shou sugi ban, an environmentally friendly fireproofing practice common in Japanese architecture. The black exterior seems to disappear into the evergreens from one angle, and pops against the white snow from another.

The view from the kitchen-dining room shows the glassed-in, central garden lightwell, accessible via large sliders.

The kitchen features custom timber furniture, Tasmanian oak cabinetry, and custom cabinetry finished in Dulux White Cabbage. The pastel green hue complements the forest-green, leather bench seats and nods to the original kitchen’s former color.

Creating a connection between the kitchen and backyard makes the room “feel so much more spacious, despite it not being huge,” says Thomsen.

“I love the idea of hidden gems and an element of surprise,” says architect Kirsten Johnstone. “In this project, the application of a consistent material across the front facade provides ambiguity; the front door is clad in the same timber as the walls and doesn’t have a door handle. It is a quirky element that lends the opening of the door a sense of drama.”

Timber-framed glass sliding doors open up the interior to the outdoors and natural light. Western red cedar shingles and Tasmanian oak shiplap clad the exterior.
