A long hallways separates the common areas from the three bedrooms and bathrooms, and a slight curve provides some privacy.

Lawler's mom wanted an all-white kitchen, and he delivered with Caesarstone countertops in Blizzard alongside Venice terrazzo tile from Concrete Collaborative. A Mags Sofa and 82 Armchairs from Hay sit in the living room.

The kitchen cabinets are painted Narragansett Green by Benjamin Moore, with a backsplash of Mineral Tiles. The stools are from Norm Architects by Audo, and the island lights by Original BTC.

The counters are Calacatta Turquoise from ABC Stone.

A fluted glass wall lets light from the exterior window shine through. A custom oak vanity sits with Artistic Tile ‘Invisible Blue Marble Mosaic.’ The pendant is by Tracy Glover.

Sugarhouse reworked the living room storage and reoriented the room to better occupy the available space. An Ellison Studio sofa, recovered in Dedar Patchwork Fabric, fits the whole family for movie nights. The coffee table is from Etsy and the rug is Nordic Knots. The overhead light is a vintage Poul Henningsen via 1st Dibs.

Sugarhouse Design & Architecture lightened up the entry hall, thanks to interior fluted glass panels, white oak floors with a contrasting walnut inlay, and custom oak closets that reach to the ceiling (after removing the fussy tray feature there). The bench is custom-designed by Sugarhouse and fabricated by Elwood Design Co in Orange, CA, and the ceiling light is by Modern Forms.

An ample sill made of English elm was built into two front windows to create a gathering spot that is visually connected to the street. Donna Wilson’s lively Ernest pouf in coral Nos Da upholstery for SCP adds extra seating in the living room.

A new carport was constructed to accommodate a ramp on the interior.

The renovation reconfigured the kitchen to include a peninsula, which has a secondary level for the owners' wheelchair-using daughter.

In the bathroom closest to their daughter's bedroom, the owners made the shower accessible to a wheelchair.

After: The living room overlooks the great room below. Now when you walk in the house, you can see clear out to the trees in the back—an idea sparked by an interior designer friend who commented that the most important aspect of a design is what you see when you walk in the front door.

For the sake of affordability and durability, the architect employed vinyl flooring for $5,980 throughout the ADU. In the open-plan kitchen/dining/living area, a vaulted ceiling lends a feeling of luxury and spaciousness.

A wall of built-in storage cubbies, shelving, and a bench anchors the bright white-painted bedroom, which features a walk-in closet.

The space's neutral palette was intentional, since Amy thought that it would naturally connect with the outdoors. "By keeping things neutral, our space always feels peaceful," he says.

"Around the time we were thinking of moving back [to San Francisco], I took a trip to Marfa, Texas, and fell in love with the agelessness of Donald Judd’s work," says Amy. "I liked the idea of having a classic American reference to the space, since we are influenced as much from America as we are by Asian culture."

The pendant lamp above the dining space combines Western industrial touches with an Asian wink at paper lanterns. It was the basis of the renovation's design.

The owners have been collecting art for years and the architects ensured there was plenty of display space after the remodel. “We know artists, we've worked with artists, and we value artists,” says the owner, noting that they’ve bought a lot of pieces at non-profit art auctions and in the local area.
