The living area where the kids gather features large windows for forest views in multiple directions.

Designer Emily Rand mixed expensive and more affordable finishes to stay within budget, combining Moroccan encaustic Clé tile with wall-mounted sinks from Kohler in the kids’ bathroom.

“With the separate levels, children and adults have their own territories but can also come together,” explains Clive.

“I wanted it to feel almost like you’re in a helicopter when you’re on the top floor,” adds Clive.

Beach, hills, and flatlands vibes all swirl together in architect Clive Wilkinson's Los Angeles home, where guests are greeted with a laser-cut metal stair railing. Situated on a steeply sloping site, the distinctive structure lends itself to a living attic, pool deck, and garden terrace, mixing elements like low-slung Italian furniture and oak flooring. Bright green makes a splash in the kitchen, which is tucked underneath Douglas fir rafters.

“There was an art to the renovation. We wanted to bring the house into the 21st century while also paying homage to its history,” says architect Cristina Graff.

Western red cedar slat panels are paired with a pine ceiling and stained oak cabinets in the kitchen. Model Six Stools by Jeff Covey for Herman Miller line the concrete counter.

A General Electric stereo cabinet and a 1950s chair are among the vintage pieces in the living room.

The en suite bathroom features a soaking tub and large windows overlooking the marshy waters.
