For a couple with three young sons and a dog living in Canyon Lake, California, Popix Designs founder Lizzie Green laid out a grid of ceramic tiles in a checkered pattern that matches the home renovation’s playful ’70s vibe.

“We came up with the design for the sofa on-site, and mocked it up using all sorts of things—paint cans, empty boxes, and so on—to be sure that heads would clear the pitch, and that the angle would cut back correctly to create a cozy fireside seat,” Holly says.

The custom sofa is finished in black corduroy.

The birch was custom kerfed to look like planks and finished in a white varnish. The table and peninsula were also made to fit snugly into the A-frame.

Holly Hollenbeck spent about a year giving her A-frame home near Lake Tahoe a gut renovation.

“It’s supposed to feel like a hug when you’re in it,” Shelley says of the all-black bathroom on the first floor.

Black tile is juxtaposed with bronze fixtures and a wood countertop that was made from a hemlock tree on the property.
