Having the basement connected to the rest of the home means the media room can be downstairs, and the living room functions as a quieter space for socializing or reading.

The team carried through the same Douglas Fir millwork featured in the kitchen into the primary bedroom. These intentional material choices connect the interior to the locale, as Douglas Fir is a native tree species to the coast of British Columbia.

Rather than positioning their bed against a wall, Andrea used a dresser to create a floating support so that Rick and Lucy's bed would be centered to the window with expansive views of the surrounding coast.

The forest feeling continues in the evergreens surrounding the house. Adding to the outdoor area are Artemide Dioscuri sconces and Loll Designs outdoor dining furniture from Design Within Reach.

Douglas fir floors and a natural finish knotty pine ceiling run through the home’s second level, which was added in the 1980s and has an extra sitting room. “There’s a warmth to the wood we didn’t want to give up,” Karyn says.

A sensitivity to color and texture drove many design decisions. In the family room, a plywood climbing wall adds a playful touch.

“We were trying to be respectful of the original house but also feel free to make changes,” says Jagoda.

In the living room, a Malm fireplace sits on a yellow powder-coated steel table that matches the bookshelf ladder leading to the loft. Jagoda designed the table with space underneath to store firewood.

The backyard office looks out on a beautiful cherry tree. “I feel so fortunate that while I’m working I can see this tree and beyond it the home that Becca designed for us,” says Alex.

Sliding glass doors from Marvin lead to the patio, which features a trio of tiered concrete planters that double as bleacher-style seating. “When we have friends over, they like to gather on the steps or planters,” says Rebecca, “and then it all flows naturally up to the yard, where they can find places to sit and eat.” On the patio, a grill from Fisher & Paykel stands ready for serious barbecuing. The chair is from CB2.

Rebecca removed the wall in the entrance hallway to open up the living area and added storage units under the staircase.

The couple's master bedroom features oak wood floors and views of the Red Wood Maple tree. This private area of the home is quiet and tucked away, primed for peace and quiet.

The home's floor-to-celing windows and sliding doors are by Pella. When weather allows, the Odess family pushes them open, allowing for entertaining flow and genuine indoor-outdoor living.

The existing interior was removed and completely rebuilt using the structure's exterior walls as boundaries for a grand dining and living area. The new cement floor was re-poured on grade for a contemporary look and feel.

While the new facade is swathed in black stucco, it maintains elements of the original carriage house, which is hidden within the wall. Beyond the grounding stucco base, Healey designed two white volumes to be seen above, teasing the idea that more exists beyond the entry point.

Becky and Rob never used the roof terrace that leads out from their master bedroom because it was tired and uninviting, as well as not being structurally safe.
