In this seating nook on the patio, a Kalon Divan Twin bed sits under a Hoist Pendant from Rich Brilliant Willing.

The kitchen is defined by an extensive island with an oak base and a blue limestone counter, designed and fabricated by Klein Agency.

The flooring throughout it a light-toned wide-plank oak, and all walls were finished in Roman clay plaster by Portola Paints, for a subtle texture. The Drifted stools from Hem have cork seats, while the sculptural coffee machine from Anza is made of Corian. The wall sconces are from RBW, and all faucets by Kohler.

"We didn't want to put a lot of furniture out there," says Terry of the east terrace, adding that they sometimes bring the dining table outside for meals. "You can make it work with whatever you want."

Designed by Vincent Appel, principal of Of Possible Architectures, and built by Kent Hicks Construction, this single-story residence in the Berkshires of Massachusetts frames the surrounding landscape.

The powder room is a retreat from the main living areas. The firm set off the Victorian ash storage and mirror unit by surrounding it with black hexagon tile. A "sky tunnel" in the ceiling floods the room with natural light.

Canyon Creek Burnished Indigo cabinets that contrast the white walls and marble-mimicking quartz countertops. Brass fixtures and pulls.

The home was thoughtfully designed to take full advantage of the property's idyllic surroundings. A serene guest bathroom features a frosted wall of glass and clerestory window, inspiring a gracious play on light and shadow.

In the entrance, a team with the general contracting firm Martha uncovered an abstract mural that Engels painted himself and then plastered over. He also made the geometric door handle. Simon speculates that Engels sourced the marble, found all over the house, from Expo ’58, after the pavilions had been dismantled.

The house has two spacious outdoor patios for entertaining.

The redesign of the staircase is a contemporary touch which could have just as easily existed in the home's original state. The wood slat screen blends with the wooden staircase and the wood ceiling opening the space and making it feel bigger—a huge improvement over the sheetrock wall that had been previously there.
