The flooring throughout it a light-toned wide-plank oak, and all walls were finished in Roman clay plaster by Portola Paints, for a subtle texture. The Drifted stools from Hem have cork seats, while the sculptural coffee machine from Anza is made of Corian. The wall sconces are from RBW, and all faucets by Kohler.
In the entrance, a team with the general contracting firm Martha uncovered an abstract mural that Engels painted himself and then plastered over. He also made the geometric door handle. Simon speculates that Engels sourced the marble, found all over the house, from Expo ’58, after the pavilions had been dismantled.
The redesign of the staircase is a contemporary touch which could have just as easily existed in the home's original state. The wood slat screen blends with the wooden staircase and the wood ceiling opening the space and making it feel bigger—a huge improvement over the sheetrock wall that had been previously there.
